Hand Thing is a well known viral YouTube video from ShayeSaintJohn. Shaye Saint John is a fictional former model who had become disfigured in a car accident and recreated herself out of mannequin parts. In Hand Thing, Shay Saint John is compelled to perform certain hand gestures over and over again relentlessly, without any sign of ever stopping. More than just a “humorous,” “weird,” “creepy” or “disturbing” video, all terms used in an attempt to describe this short film, Hand Thing is an unflinching look at mental illness, self denial, addiction and obsessive compulsive behavior. Eric Fournier, the creator of Shaye Saint John, was himself an alcoholic, who tragically passed away in 2010 at 42 years of age.
