Is Netflix’s Decision to Cancel THE OA Actually a Good Thing?

from The OA, Part 2, Chapter 5

In many ways, The OA is a dream. It is a symbolic interpretation of reality as intuited and interpreted by the minds of Brit Marling, Zal Batmanglig, and all others who had a hand in bringing this creation to life, constructed in such a way as to bring about a cohesive narrative as well as to work around any restraints met with during the production processes. It is, therefore, not an accurate depiction of reality in and of its self. This dream that we call The OA, however, remains imbued with certain deep and fundamental elements of truth that resonate with, and stir the minds of, its viewership. It is this intuitive, internal and emotional, understanding of truth, rather than one based upon logic and reason, as with all forms of Art, that is responsible for the deep love and admiration of its fan base.

The Cancellation of The OA, and the resultant reactions of the fans of the show, has brought about a new and heightened level of awareness of The OA within society that, lets face it, as a small niche within a genre, may never have come about naturally and certainly not as rapidly. This has driven, and is continuing to drive, many who may have never given a thought to it before, to tune in, to see what it is all about, and to expose themselves to these truths in such a way that it expands their own consciousness and awareness as to these certain fundamental truths of reality.

Netflix should be applauded for their decision to cancel The OA, rather than be derided for it, because of the heightened awareness and resultant expansion of consciousness that this has allowed to bring about as a result. It is even possible that Netflix’s decision to go ahead and cancel The OA was a tactical one designed to see if they could in fact bolster the viewership and numbers of The OA in such a way as to allow them to justify re-instating it and seeing it through to its conclusion. Whether the decision to cancel The OA was a tactical decision upon the part of Netflix, or whether it was simply one based upon numbers, the resultant effects are the same.

While I myself would love to see the continuation and designed conclusion of The OA, and personally rejoice in the amounts of pleasure and of conscious evolution that this would bring about, there are no guarantees. While I believe that this heightened awareness, and the resultant desire of the collective consciousness will ultimately have the effect of bringing about a continuation of The OA, even if it is in a truncated version or even a single movie rather than that planned out in the original design, I can not guarantee that this will come about. What I will say is that rather than being saddened by what might not be, we should celebrate what it was, what it has given us and what it continues to be. Do not wallow in the loss, in the anger and in the disappointment, but revel in the pleasure that is The OA. Watch it over and over again. Share it with others. Learn and Perform the Five Movements. Fantasize about it. Allow yourself to daydream about it. See yourself from inside the story and how that story would naturally evolve. Rather than allowing The OA to die, allow it to continue to live and to reside deep within your heart of hearts. No one can take that away from you but yourself.
