If you are a fan of Stalker (1979) or Solaris (1972), both films by Andrei Tarkovsky and both TESSALO films, then you owe it to yourself to watch Annihilation. Do not expect an Andrei Tarkovsky film, because it is not. No one can make an Andrei Tarkovsky film, nor should they attempt to do so. Yet the influence is undeniable.
Based upon the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, in Annihilation an area of land has become enveloped in a mysterious energy referred to as The Shimmer (think “The Zone” in Stalker). Lena (Natalie Portman) enters The Shimmer in an attempt to find out what has happened to her husband (who had previously entered The Shimmer as part of a military expedition) with a small group of researchers. The group finds themselves slowly unraveling as they make their way towards the lighthouse at its center, and possible answers towards this mystery.
At times beautiful, at times thought provoking, Anihilation is definitely one of those Things Everyone Should See At Least Once. #TESSALO
